Bonjour to all of you. Hello, everyone! Kelli here from She Learns Video, and today I’m going to walk you through the process of configuring your Canon EOS R6 so that it can record video. If you just got this camera, you’re going to be really happy with the possibilities it offers when it comes to shooting movies, especially if you’re a beginner. And now that we’re here, I’ll demonstrate how to properly configure your camera so that you can start making movies right away. So let’s hop in.
The purpose of today’s tutorial is to demonstrate how I configure my Canon EOS R6 for the purpose of recording video. If you are a photographer, you will most likely be coming over from this little manual mode up here on the dial, or if you are shooting in any of the other photography modes, you can see them here. If you are a photographer, you will most likely be coming over from this little manual mode up here on the dial.
After that, all you need to do is set your camera to the “small video camera” option found over here, and you will be ready to begin recording the video. You’ll note that down here, on the rear of the screen, you can see the mode that it is now operating in.
You should check that you are now operating in manual mode and video mode. You may choose between two distinct “movie modes” (sometimes known as “video modes”), but the one you wish to use is “manual.” And then at this point, you will notice a wide variety of options available to you with regard to the camera.
Depending on what I’m shooting, the majority of the time I’ll have the focus set to manual mode. I will show you some of those options, and then we will discuss how to adjust the exposure, the white balance, and how to set up your audio. When I am getting ready to produce a movie, the very first thing I’m going to do is pick what frame rate I want to shoot it in. This will be the starting point for everything else.
If you press this button here labeled “Q,” you will notice that it will provide you with a number of alternatives to choose from, and the length of the box that appears next to it will represent your frame rate. You’ll see all of the available options at the bottom of this window, and you can navigate between them using the toggle joystick in the upper-right corner. When I can, I like to have my footage at 4K resolution, and the majority of the time, I shoot at a frame rate of 60 frames per second.
And if I’m going to be photographing people, talking to the camera, or using any kind of audio, I’ll be shooting at a rate of 24 frames per second. This is a clear demonstration of this fact. Therefore, there is the possibility of using 4K at 60, 30, or 24 frames per second. And then there is also full HD, which is denoted by the notation 1080p, which can be found here on the rear, and you have the option of selecting it for either 60, 30, or 24 frames per second for 1080.
The conclusion is as follows. That is the question that has to be answered first. I find that I spend most of my time in the 60, so I’ll usually just leave it at that. After determining the number of frames per second I wanted to capture, the next thing I needed to do was select the shutter speed I wanted to use. The shutter speed should be roughly twice as fast as the frame rate as a general rule. When I’m putting up cameras, I like to begin there, even though it’s not really a hard and fast guideline to follow.
Therefore, if you go in here, click, and then alter that, you will be able to do so. If I were shooting at a rate of 24 frames per second, the shutter speed I would aim for would probably be something in the neighborhood of 1/50 of a second. However, as we are currently working at 60 frames per second, I will change it to 1/125.
That would be the speed of my shutter there. Make your choice. In addition, I have a dial-up here on the top that I can use to choose the shutter speed. As a result, you will observe that each time I turn the dial, the shutter speed adapts accordingly. You are free to set up your camera in any manner you like, but here is how I have mine arranged. In addition to that, it has a touch screen, which is a really convenient feature. The next component to consider is your camera’s aperture.
And as for myself, whenever it’s feasible, I prefer to photograph with a fairly wide aperture. It kind of depends on what I’m filming, but the vast majority of the time, if I’m doing family videos or any kind of B-roll for weddings, I’ll be relatively wide open. This is especially true for outdoor weddings.
And then, if I’m conducting an interview in the style of a talking head, I want to make sure that everyone is in focus, so I’ll probably be a little bit more around a 4 to a 5.6. Therefore, you have the ability to choose the appearance and the style that you desire, and the aperture setting can assist you in achieving those goals.
I have a dial set up here that I can use to modify that as well, or as you saw, you can simply press the small Q button. Or, in all honesty, you don’t even have to press the Q; all you have to do is touch it, and you’ll be able to move it. Consequently, I adore the alternatives provided by the touch screen there. After that, I adjust the exposure by adjusting the ISO till I am happy with it. And simply based on how much light you have available, you may do it here. The next thing I’m going to do is adjust the white balance on my camera.
If you press the Q button, you will see that the temperature is now adjusted to Kelvin; this is the temperature at which I find it easiest to photograph. And if you’re just getting started with video, my advice is to quickly get proficient in shooting in the Kelvin color space. Additionally, it is of great use in the field of photography. However, when you pick that, you will have the option to modify the temperature so that it is extremely warm, or you will have the option to decrease it to the 4,000s so that it is significantly colder. Therefore, you may alter that there to meet any requirements you have.
And once you’ve positioned it so that it works well with your backdrop and whatever else you’re shooting, all you have to do is set it, and it will maintain its position for the duration of the filming process. You have access to a variety of different choices under this menu, which is referred to as the white balance.
You don’t want the white balance to fluctuate while you’re recording, so I strongly suggest that you choose something that’s continuous rather than the auto white balance feature on your camera. Select something that’s consistent now. When taking pictures, a lot of photographers utilize auto white balance since it’s fairly simple to modify it in post-processing if you’re shooting in raw. However, when taking videos, it’s a lot more difficult to get the white balance just right.
Therefore, you should locate the proper white balance, find the right exposure, and get it perfect in the camera; doing so will make the editing process a lot simpler for you later on. I always prefer to make sure that my focus settings are where I want them to be before I start shooting. Now that we have our exposure set, our white balance picked, and we know what frame rate we’re shooting in, we can go on to focusing.
I will… When you enter the menu, you need to press the tiny Q button, then make your selection up here. I haven’t adjusted my autofocus to perform facial tracking or eye tracking yet. Additionally, a wide variety of alternatives are available for your selection here. Therefore, depending on what you’re shooting and what your needs are, the Canon EOS R6 provides you with a wide variety of alternatives to choose from.
Because I shoot and film a lot of families, a lot of small companies, and weddings, where there are people moving about, I like to have face tracking enabled while also having eye autofocus turned on. This helps me get the type of shots that I like to see in my films.
That you may choose the option that you consider to be the most suitable. Because this is a full-touch screen, all you have to do to focus your camera on something is click on it, and it will immediately begin the process of autofocusing on the subject. You also have the option to switch to manual focus if that is more of your style.
Therefore, if you click this switch on your lens so that it is in the manual focus position, you will be able to use this dial to manually focus your camera and set the focus to the desired position. When I am filming B-roll or when I want my film to have kind of a dreamy, out-of-focus look coming into focus, I will occasionally utilize manual focus.
Therefore, it is a creative tool that you can utilize, and I believe that it is one that, with practice, surely teaches you when it works best and when you need it the most. Therefore, focusing manually is a possibility. In addition, the face-tracking and eye-focusing capabilities of this camera produce excellent results when used together.
Therefore, the final item that we’ll want to verify is the settings for our audio. As I talk, you can see down here that the levels are fluctuating up and down. You are able to observe a decline in the numbers whenever I am quiet. After that, you’ll see that they rise and fall in response to what I say.
To ensure that these are configured correctly, we will first press the little Q button located over here, and then we will move down to the section that has the mic icon and the letter M. You are going to click on it, and when you do, you will notice that you have the ability to alter your levels based on the input that your microphone is receiving.
Therefore, I do not have as many choices available to me with this microphone. This is a Rode VideoMicro if you were wondering. You may make adjustments to the levels immediately on the back of the Rode VideoMicPro microphone. This feature is available. But you have to carry out every step of this one while the camera is rolling. The Q button will take us to our microphone, and right now, as you can see, the volume level is rather low since the microphone is not taking up too much sound.
You are going to want to increase it so that you can begin to watch those levels go up and down. You are going to want to make sure that you are kind of right about here is your safe zone at this 12 decibels in order to guarantee that the sound you are picking up is of high quality and that you will be able to hear it when you go in to edit it and when you play it back.
You don’t want it to get too high because then your audio will be truncated, and it will sound incredibly distorted. This is why you don’t want it to get too high.
If you see it up here, kind of at the end of the yellow into the red, then you absolutely need to bring it down to a lower level. And depending on the kind of microphone you’re working with, you’ll just have to experiment with different settings for it.
If you’re merely going to utilize the microphone that is built into the camera, I strongly recommend that you invest in an external microphone instead since it will provide you with far higher-quality sound than what you’d get otherwise. I really hope that was informative. Please do not hesitate to contact us if you have any inquiries.
